Success Breeds Confidence, Not the Other Way Around
Confidence is not what gets you started. It is what shows up after you survive the reps.

I saw a video the other day that stopped me mid-scroll.
You can watch it here real quick.
Jimmy Carr nails something most people get completely wrong: the relationship between confidence and success.
We're told our whole lives that confidence leads to success. Be confident. Fake it till you make it. Walk into the room like you own it. Project certainty even when you have no idea what you're doing.
That's backwards.
And it's costing business owners years of progress because they're waiting for confidence to show up before they make a move.
Confidence Doesn't Create Success. Success Creates Confidence.
You don't become good at something by being confident about it first.
You become good at something by doing it badly, learning from it, doing it slightly less badly, and repeating that cycle until you're actually competent.
Then, and only then, does confidence show up.
Think about the first time you:
You weren't confident going in. You were terrified. Your stomach was in knots. You second-guessed every decision.
But you did it anyway.
And when it worked, even if it didn't work perfectly, that's when confidence showed up.
Not before. After.
Confidence isn't the fuel that gets you started. It's the result of doing the thing and surviving it.
The Confidence Trap Here's the trap most business owners fall into:
They see someone who's good at something...public speaking, sales, leadership, Negotiation, and they think, "They must have always been confident at that."
No. They weren't.
They were terrible at it once. And they did it anyway. Over and over. Until they got good. And getting good made them confident.
The people who look confident? They're not confident because they were born that way or because they "believe in themselves" harder than you do.
They're confident because they've already done the thing fifty times and know they can handle it.
Confidence is pattern recognition. It's your brain saying, "I've been here before. I know how this goes. I've got this."
But you can't have that pattern without doing the thing first.
What This Actually Means for Running Your Business If you're sitting on something right now waiting to feel more confident before you do it… stop waiting.
You're never going to feel ready before you start. That's not how it works.
Here's what does work:
Do It Scared
Hire before you feel confident you can manage a bigger team. Launch before you feel confident the product is perfect.
Make the sales call before you feel confident you know what to say.
Raise your prices before you feel confident people will pay.
The confidence comes after you do it and see that the world didn't end.
Do It Messy
You don't need to have it all figured out before you start.
You need to start, figure it out as you go, and adjust.
The first version of anything is going to be rough. That's not a bug. That's the process.
Every successful business owner has a graveyard of messy first attempts behind them. The difference is they didn't let the mess stop them from starting.
Do It Imperfectly
Perfection is a delay tactic.
It's your brain's way of keeping you safe from the discomfort of putting something out there that might not work.
But you don't build confidence by waiting until something is perfect. You build it by shipping imperfect things, learning from them, and making them better.
Done beats perfect. Every time.
You Build Confidence by Stacking Small Wins
Here's how confidence actually gets built in a business:
You make a cold call. It goes okay. Not great, but okay. You make another one. It goes a little better. By call fifty, you're not nervous anymore. You know what to say. You know how to handle objections. You sound confident because you've done it enough times to know it works.
You hire your first employee. It's stressful. You're not sure if you're doing it right. But they work out. You hire a second one. A third one. By hire ten, you're not second-guessing yourself anymore. You know what to look for. You know how to onboard. You sound confident because you've built a track record. You launch a new service. It doesn't go perfectly. But you learn from it. You tweak it. You launch again. By the third iteration, you're not scared anymore. You know what works. You sound confident because you've done it before.
That's the pattern. Small wins, stacked over time, create confidence.
Not affirmations. Not faking it. Actual reps.
The Business Owners Who Move Fast Aren't More Confident. They're Just More Willing to Be Uncomfortable. The difference between business owners who move fast and the ones who stay stuck isn't confidence.
It's willingness to do things before they feel ready.
Fast movers don't wait to feel confident. They act, learn, adjust, and build confidence through repetition.
Slow movers wait to feel ready. And because confidence doesn't show up before action, they stay waiting.
If you're stuck right now… If there's something you've been putting off because you don't feel ready… Ask yourself: What's the smallest version of this I could do to just get started?
Not the perfect version. Not the version that requires you to have it all figured out. The messy, imperfect, "let's just see what happens" version.
Do that. Learn from it. Do it again.
Confidence will show up. But only after you start.
Stop Waiting to Feel Ready You're not going to wake up one day suddenly confident about the thing you've never done before.
Confidence doesn't work that way.
You do the thing. You survive it. You learn from it. You do it again. And after enough reps, confidence shows up.
That's the only path. So if you're sitting on something right now waiting to feel more confident...stop waiting.
Do it scared. Do it messy. Do it imperfectly.
Success will come first. Confidence will catch up.
